Choosing The Right Moisturizer

Moisturizers

Moisturizing your skin is perhaps the most important parts of your skincare routine. With so many brands available, it can be confusing to choose the right lotion. These tips will help you choose the right product for daily use.

It’s true that there are other skin care products such as moisturizers and creams that works similarly like lotion. But between moisturizer and cremes, there are notable differences such as their composition. Generally, creams are thicker with a higher amount of oils and emollients and they tend to be thicker. Moisturizer, on the other hand, is the lighter version with high water to oil ratio, producing a smoother, lighter consistency.

The main reason why we use moisturizer is to improve the overall condition of the skin, plump up the skin, making them soft supple, and of course, to moisturize and protect the skin from various environmental stresses.

Keep in mind though, just because the product you are holding labelled as ‘lotion’ doesn’t mean you can apply it liberally to your face. It’s because the skin on your face is much sensitive due to higher cell turnover rate and it’s less thick than the skin on the rest of your body.  Thus it’s not always recommended to use body lotion on the face due to its richer consistency that could block the pores in your face and cause acne. This is a personal preference but you may want to choose a good facial moisturizer instead.

To choose the right lotion for soft skin, it’s essential that you choose according to your skin type. For dry skin, you need to have a lotion that is rich in emollients like grapeseed oil and/or jojoba that will give ample hydration as well as keeping the moisture intact to keep your skin supple.

Oily skin may not benefit from too much emollient in a lotion, so you need to choose ones with higher water content to keep moisture while preventing the skin from producing too much of natural oils. Here’s a tip: a lotion that is non-comedogenic is preferable as it won’t clog the pores, causing you unwanted acne breakouts. As for combination skin, you can choose a variety of lotions that can moisturize with lightweight oils such as cetyl alcohol.

And if you have sensitive skin, it’s highly recommended that you choose ones with calming ingredients such as aloe and chamomile to soothe irritated skin while avoiding ones with allergens and preservatives.

A good lotion should provide a good amount of hydration to keep your skin smooth and supple. Choose one suitable for your skin and your skin will thank you for it.
